The Story of Music Lessons in Miami
Laura Hollis began teaching a few private music lessons for kids in Tampa, her hometown in 2011. She was a recent college graduate from the USF School of Music. But she wasn’t quite sure what she wanted to do. Music academia had taken some of the sparkle out of the arts for Laura.
But as she taught, she noticed that each lesson was looking more unique as time went on. She enjoyed crafting our asset-based approach to teaching music lessons for kids. And she didn’t use typical method books. Instead, Laura taught her students valuable technique and theory using the music they enjoyed.
Suddenly the studio was full. She couldn’t take on any new students.
As risky as it felt, Laura hired a teacher to take on our wait list and add guitar lessons. She kept hiring teachers and adding instruments until the city was covered with music lessons by Barrett School of Music.
Then she set her sights on Miami – her favorite city. In 2017, Barrett School of Music launched music lessons in Miami. And we haven’t looked back! Since then, many partnerships have developed. We’ve worked with the Frost School of Music, the Coconut Grove Art Festival, Gulliver Schools as well as a variety of magazines and family organizations. From here, we have developed more services in addition to music lessons in Miami.

Our amazing teachers are working toward or hold bachelor and master degrees in music. They have each performed across the country, sometimes internationally and in recording studios. Additionally, they have run countless music classes and camps, and they are self-starters. As a music school in Miami, we have partnered with many schools to grow programs and performances.
We provide after school guitar classes and music enrichment classes for multiple schools in our neighborhoods. During which, we facilitate everything from obtaining instruments to end of the semester performances and working diligently with faculty for mutual success.
Also, we work closely with public middle schools and run sectionals during school and at after school rehearsals for orchestra, band and choir. We have walked hundreds of students through successful All State auditions, Master Musician submissions and ensemble MPA performances.
Lastly, we have run full vocal directing for several high school drama programs. Shows our studio has run point on include: Chicago, Into the Woods, Cabaret, In the Heights and more. Drama teachers rely on us to prepare their students vocally for major productions, and we deliver amazing teamwork for an outstanding production.

The Barrett School of Music is also a major connector for musicians and events/venues. We have organized and rehearsed pit orchestras for live Broadway shows. We have sourced pop bands with original music with short notice to support local music festivals. For our own events, we have created ensemble to perform interesting spins on songs kids love from movies like Frozen, Greatest Showman and Lion King. Even placing a solo guitarist for a special event at a restaurant is easy for us.
Our pricing is affordable. Plus we handle every last detail up until the show begins – payments, rehearsals, communications and organizing. We are built to coordinate musicians in every context, and that means a lot of check boxes on your to-do list are eliminated.
